M M Jasim :
Most of the schools in the capital are charging students with hefty fees to register them for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination.
The school authorities took Tk 6000 to 10,000 from each student instead of Tk 1500 fixed by the Education Board.
Many students and their guardians alleged that they were asked to pay extra money without raising any question. The school teachers told them that the extra money includes coaching, laboratory and other fees, they said.
“I had to pay Tk 6000 as registration fees at Dania AK School and College. It was totally illogical,” Khaled Ahsan, a guardian, told The New Nation on Tuesday.
Secretary (Secondary and Higher Education Division) of the Eudcation Ministry Md Sohrab Hossain said, they are looking into the matter. Action will follow after investigation.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on November 8 requested the Cabinet Division to take necessary actions against educational institutions that collect exorbitant registration
fees from candidates of SSC and Dakhil examinations.
In a letter signed by ACC Director General Sarwar Mahmud, the anti-graft watchdog alleged that some schools were demanding extra fees from guardians of students, who fail in the test examinations, to give them opportunity to take part in the SSC or Dakhil examination.
“Such bad practice is damaging goodwill and image of government and private schools. It needs to be controlled immediately to be initiated by ministries, directorates, departments and local administration,” it reads.
After three days of the letter, the ACC started drive against the corrupt authorities of the educational institutions in the capital.
On Sunday, It conducted a drive in a school at Jatrabari on charges of charging extra money for the registration for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination.
The sudden drive was conducted at Jatrabari Ideal High School and College on receiving allegations that the school was charging more than the amount set by government for the registration.
During the drive, an ACC team found the school authorities to have charged students more than the amount set by the government to register for SSC examination of 2019.
The school’s principal (acting) Md Moniruzzman admitted about taking the extra money saying that they were taking it as coaching, Rag day and Model test fees.
On Monday, the ACC team led by Assistant Director Nazmul Hasan and Deputy Assistant Director Md Shihab Salam conducted a drive at Dania AK School and College. They found the similar case as the school took the extra fees from the students.
ACC Director General Sarwar Mahmud said that they would continue their drive against the irregular schools.
