Schoolgirl loses leg due to reckless driving in Jashore

After loss of hands and legs in separate road crashes, another schoolgirl lost her leg and two others suffered injuries when a rickshaw-van carrying them was hit by a lorry at Navaron intersection in Sarsha upazila of Jashore district on Wednesday morning.
The victim identified as Meftahul Jannat alias Nipa, 12, was a student of Burujbagan Pilot School. She was a daughter of Rafiqul Islam, inhabitant of Burujbagan in the upazila.
Her right leg was amputed at Jashore Sadar Hospital, reports our Jashore Correspondent quoting police.
Several hundred demonstrators, including students, torched the lorry that hit the rickshaw-van. They also vandalized several vehicles and blocked the Benapole-Jashore Highway for several hours demanding justice.
Sixth graders Nipa, Rina and Saleh, students of Burujbagan High School, were injured after a pick-up van of Palli Bidyut Samity rammed into their school van on Jessore-Benapole Highway, severing Nipa’s leg.
Locals have blocked Jashore-Benapole Highway, in protest as Nipa, a female school student lost her leg in a road accident in Jashore.
Mokarram Hossain, Navaron Pilot Secondary Girls’ School Headmaster said, “While going to school on Wednesday morning, a lorry coming from Jashore hit the van carrying three schoolgirls. At this, three students fell from the van and ran over Nipa’s leg. As a result, her legs were separated from the body. The seriously injured Nipa and two other students were admitted to the local hospital.”
Headmaster Mokarram Hossain demanded the trial of the driver on charge of reckless driving.
Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Pulak Kumar Mandal, said, “It is a very sad and tragic events.”
Sharsha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mashiur Rahman said that locals withdrew the road blocking on the highway after getting assurance of the justice .
Earlier, the right leg of a woman was crushed by the wheel of a bus when she was getting off of it in Malibag intersection area of Dhaka on May 4 last year. The victim was identified as Nilufa Begum, 40.
On April 21, 2018, Rozina Akhter’s right leg was severed from knee while Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation bus ran over her in the city’s Banani.
Rozina, who was rushed to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation in a critical condition, lost right leg little above her knee and injured in chest and other parts would be needed an artificial limb to become walk able again, said NITOR Director Gani Mollah.
Meanwhile, transport worker Khaled Hasan Hridoy, who lost his right arm during an accident in Gopalganj on April 17 lat year, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital Dr Shamsuzzaman.
On April 4, 2018, Rajib Hossain, 22, a third-year student of Government Titumir College, also a passenger, lost his right arm after it was sandwiched between two speeding buses trying to overtake each other in the capital’s Bangla Motor that already has created a huge out cry across the country in last year.
