Martha Lindstrom-Nurjahan Begum Girls’ High School was established in Dapanajor village of Basail Upazila in Tangail in 1992. It was founded by Carl Fredrik Lindström, a citizen of Norway. An elite businessman built a resort next to the school. As the entrance to the resort and the school are one, the school is on the verge of destruction.
Norwegian citizen Carl Fredrik Lindstrom and his local friend architect Akhtar Hamid Masood established ‘Martha Lindstrom-Nurjahan Begum Girls’ High School’ in the name of their mother in the village of Dapanajor.
It is known that Carl Frederik Lindström, an official of the Norwegian Embassy at that time, came to Dapnajor on the invitation of his friend Akhtar Hamid Masood. He took the initiative to establish the school by loving the people of the village.
The landlords were Akhtar Hamid Masud and prominent business leader Abul Kalam Mustafa Labu.
The school was inaugurated in 1993 with a grand ceremony. Norway’s national councilor at the opening ceremony. Rower Wick, Deputy Councilor Toreng Toreng and Mr. 35 citizens of Norway including Holtin were present.
Built with a large area, this school has gained reputation since its establishment. Girls from nearby villages are also admitted. Currently, the number of female students in MPO schools is eighty to ninety. But a year ago this number was more than three hundred.
About 10 years ago Dr. Dapnajore village. Ahsan Mansoor started the construction of the resort with the school site and adjacent agricultural land.
There is no separate road to the resort. Men and women of different ages are entering through the main gate of the school. Younger boys and girls are also entering.
Zakir Hossain, a local freedom fighter, complained that it was a hotel. The hotel is attached to a girls’ school. Unethical activities are going on in this hotel. The school is a standard educational institution within Basile Upazila. It is not right to have a hotel next to it.
Local UP member Md Noore Alam Ujjal said, when this resort started we knew something good would be done here. But when I saw that unethical activities are being conducted here by building resorts, we are protesting.
Students of the school said that earlier no outsider could enter our school. Many people move here after the resort and move to different places of the school. Many scoundrels annoy us.
The head teacher of the school Md. Mansur Rahman said that, many parents do not want to send their children to school.
Risot owner Dr. Ahsan Mansoor told reporters that I spent about 26 crore on the resort with my personal savings. Many people got employment. Even though the school and the resort are on the same road, there is no harm to the school.
Deputy Commissioner of Tangail (DC) Dr. Md. Ataul Goni said, to build a hotel or resort, government regulations must be followed. Whether it is legal or illegal will be seen subject to investigation.
