School banking to ensure financial safety of students: Atiur

Bangladesh Bank Governor (BB) Dr. Atiur Rahman at a conference here Saturday said, new generation would be boosting country’s economy and which is why the government has started school banking for the students to ensure their future financial safety.
Terming the school banking as a milestone in the new era of the country’s economy, the governor said, school students are now getting the facilities of ATM card, online banking, internet banking from even at their tender ages.
He was speaking at the school banking conference as chief guest. M Mahfuzur Rahman, executive director of Bangladesh Bank presided over the conference jointly organised by Bangladesh Bank and all of its scheduled banks at ‘Hotel Tiger Garden’ here.
Deputy Governor of BB SK Sur Chowdhury, Managing Director of National Bank A K M Shafiqur Rahman, spoke as special guests while executive director of BB Khulna office Md. Abdur Rahim delivcered the welcome speech.
General Manager of Rupali Bank in Khulna Debashish Chakroborty, local woman entrepreneur Shamima Sultana Shilu, and student saving account holders Siam Adnan, Tumpa Sheikh, among others, addressed the conference.
With a view to creating savings tendency among the school students, school banking was introduced on November 2010 which was dreamt by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.
The government has planned to construct the Padma Bridge with support from Bangladesh Bank and other Banks he said adding that people of south-western region will be directly benefited after building of Padma Bridge.
We are indebted to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his creation of Bangladesh without whom the country would never come into being, he said.
Earlier, BB Governor Atiur Rahman inaugurated school banking fair at the hotel premises by cutting ribbon. A total of 50 stalls were set up at the fair where at least 300 students from city’s 39 schools, opened savings account.
BB Governor also inaugurated sports and cultural competition among the employees of all Banks including Bangladesh Bank as chief guest by releasing balloons and pigeons at Khulna District Stadium in the city at around 8.30am today.
