SCC starts installing 22 CCTVs on important city streets

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has started setting 22 CCTV at important points of the city streets with a view to curbing street crime incidents. Initially some points have been brought under the facility while the rest areas would be covered later, officials informed.
These are set to be experimentally put on operation from tomorrow (Sunday), officials informed.
However, for the first time, 12 CCTV cameras were set on the city’s Zindabazar-Chouhatta area on 25 July of 2014, at the initiative of SCC mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury. But, things went in trouble as he was indicted in the SAMS Kibria killing case on December 30 same year and was arrested and suspended from the mayoral position. This time, 22 CCTVs are set on the road from Taltola point to Nairpul intersection through in front of Bangladesh Bank, Surma market point, Bandarbazar, Dhopadighirpar and Sobhanighat point. Besides, it is being installed from City Point to Zindabazar Point. Initially, the device is being set on the 6 km busy road this time, officials informed.
It has cost about Tk 1.8 million, chief executive officer of SCC Enamul Habib said.
A commercial firm was earlier entrusted with the job through bidding while the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) would monitor the devices and the SCC is to continue providing the technical support, sources in the SCC informed. In addition to security idea, these would help easing traffic congestion on the busy areas.
On the other hand, the law enforcement agency had motivated the owners of a number of commercial houses including private hospitals and house owners to set CCTVs on security grounds, informed the additional Deputy Commissioner of SMP Mohammad Rahamat Ullah.
 On the other hand, all the shopping malls in the city had been advised to complete the setting as soon as possible and before Eid, he said and added, many of them had already done the job.
