Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) on Sunday announced a budget of Tk312.12 crore for the 2014-15 fiscal year.
Ariful Haque Choudhury, mayor of Sylhet, announced the budget bereft of any new taxes at a crowded press conference in a city hotel.
In the budget, the SCC estimated that Tk66.13cr would be provided from its own income while the remainder would be provided by the government and development agencies.
Major development expenditures include Tk40cr for infrastructure development and expansion projects; Tk30cr for the construction of bridges, culverts and retaining walls; Tk10cr for preliminary drainage, the development of Nagar Bhaban and equipment supply; Tk10cr to construct a truck terminal; Tk4cr to excavate canals and remove illegal structures; Tk5cr to deal with water logging; Tk20cr for land acquisition, Tk5cr to build permanent offices for 27 councillors; Tk7.15cr for the development and upkeep of the Shaheed Minar, dividers, foot bridges and beautification projects; Tk3cr to set up a new filling station; Tk10cr for the Hazrat Gazi Burhan Uddin Shrine development project; Tk10cr for the city power plant; and Tk15cr to implement projects under the Bangladesh Municipal Governance and Services Project.
Ariful Haque Choudhury, Sylhet City Corporation’s BNP-backed mayor, who took charge on September 18 last year, placed his first budget yesterday. In his budget speech he said: Development and change was my campaign slogan.
