The two-day annual election of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) began on Wednesday.
The first day’s voting began at 10am and continued till 5pm with one hour recess said Md Nur Hossain Chowdhury, convener of the election sub-committee.
About 4054 members of the SCBA will use their voting right to elect the bar committee for 2014-15 through the poll.
A total of 1547 voters cast their votes on the first day.
Four candidates are vying for the position of president, four for vice-president, three each for secretary and treasurer, five for assistant secretary and 16 candidates are contesting for membership .
The main contest would be between Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannaya Parishad (SASP) and the BNP-Jamaat backed Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP).
Former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru is the president candidate of the Sammilito Ainjibi Samannay Parishad while Rabiul Alam Budu is the secretary candidate of the panel.
Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikyo Forum supported by BNP-led alliance (blue panel) has fielded Bar Council’s Vice Chairman and the SCBA former president Khandker Mahbub Hossain and SCBA Secretary and BNP Joint Secretary General Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon as candidates for the posts of president and secretary respectively.
Lawyers Abdul Momin Chowdhury and Md Yunus Ali Akhand are also in the fray for the president posts while Abu Yahiya Dulal is contesting for secretary not representing any panel.
In the last election, Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikyo Forum won 13 out of 14 posts including those of president and secretary.
