The Appellate division of the Supreme court on Monday upheld a High Court order that stayed the Election Commission’s decision allowing nine candidates, including eight BNP candidates, to contest the general election slated for December 30.
Chamber Judge of Appellate Division Justice Md Nuruzzaman passed “no order” on separate writ
petitions filed by the candidates seeking stay on the HC order.
The eight BNP candidates are-Khandaker Abu Ashfaq from Dhaka-1, Tamij Uddin from Dhaka 20, Fazlur Rahman from Joyrpurhat-1, M A Majid from Jhenidah-2, Abu Sayeed Chand from Rajshahi-6, Faridul KabirTalukder Shamim from Jamalpur-4, and Engineer Moslem Uddin from Brahmanbaria-4 while another is Mahmud Hasan Suman (independent) for Myemensingh-1.
Earlier, on Thursday the HC stayed the EC’s decision that allowed them to contest the election.
Following separate writ petitions, the HC recently stayed the Election Commission’s decision that allowed them to contest the election as their resignations from mayoral post were not accepted by the government.
Advocate Shah Manjurul Haq, petitioner’s lawyer, said that the candidates cannot run the polls following the order.
