The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the High Court order granting bail to Awami League MP Abdur Rahman Bodi in a case filed on charge of accumulating wealth illegally.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti Corruption Commission seeking a stay on the HC bail.
On Tuesday, the ACC filed the petition with the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the bail granted by the High Court to the ruling party MP. On Monday, an HC bench comprising Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq and Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury granted an interim bail for six months to Bodi in the graft case.
On October 12, a Dhaka court sent the Awami League MP to jail rejecting his bail petition when he surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case.
A Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court also on October 16 denied bail to Bodi after hearing a petition filed challenging the bail rejection by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
Meanwhile, the ACC on October 19 filed a petition with the court seeking a 10-day remand for Bodi in the case. The court is yet to hear the petition. On August 21, the ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station accusing MP Bodi, MP from Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency (Teknaf-Ukhia), of amassing wealth illegally.
As per the FIR, Bodi submitted his wealth statement to the ACC on February 23 mentioning his and his family’s wealth worth about Tk 5.2 crore.
Examining his income tax return, the ACC probe found that he acquired over Tk 16.07 crore in last five years (2009-13) and earned illegal wealth worth nearly Tk 11 crore.
