UNB, Dhaka :
The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the bail granted by the High Court to Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana in a case filed by Rajdhani Unnayan
Kartripakkha (Rajuk) under the Building Construction Act.
Supreme Court’s Appellate Division Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order following an appeal filed by the state. On March 23, the HC vacation bench comprising Justice M Rezaul Hasan and Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarker granted the Jubo League leader a six-month bail in the Rajuk case.
However, it had dismissed his bail pleas in the murder case filed over the Rana Plaza collapse that killed over 1,100 people last year. While talking to reporters after Tuesday’s SC order, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the court stayed the bail until next hearing.
Rana Plaza, a multi-storey building at Savar on the outskirts of the capital, came down crashing on April 24 last year. Rajuk filed a case with Savar Model Police Station against Sohel Rana for violating the Bangladesh National Building Code on the day.
Police also filed a case accusing six people, including Sohel Rana, on April 25 on murder charge. Police arrested Sohel Rana on April 28, 2013.
