SC stays Mahmudur’s bail till Oct 30

The Supreme Court on Sunday stayed a High Court (HC) order till October 30. The HC granted bail to detained acting editor of The Daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman in a sedition case.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after hearing on a government petition seeking a stay on the HC order.
Police arrested Mahmudur from the
Kawran Bazar office on April 18, 2013 in a case filed for alleged attempt to abduct and kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
The HC on September 7 granted bail to Mahmudur in the case clearing the way for his release from jail, but following the SC order he cannot be freed from jail until October 30.
Additional Attorney General Murad Reza represented the State while senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Mahmudur Rahman.
Mahmudur has been in detention since April 2013 and shown arrested in several cases. However, he got bail in all the cases.
