Film on Rana Plaza: SC rejects review plea on screening

UNB, Dhaka :The Supreme Court turned down an appeal to review Appellate Division’s decision to allow screening of the film ‘Rana Plaza’, based on the rescue of victim Reshma alive from the ruins of Rana Plaza building after 17 days of its collapse.A four-member bench of the Appellate Division of the court, led by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order scrapping the plea on Thursday. Now, there are no more hurdles for the release of the movie, said A M Amin Uddin, lawyer of the producer Shamima Akhter.Earlier, on August 24, the High Court banned for six months the screening of ‘Rana Plaza, saying that the movie was made ignoring the guidelines set by the court earlier.The court passed the order after hearing a petition filed by president of Bangladesh National Garment Workers Employees League Sirajul Islam.On September 6, the Supreme Court scrapped the HC order in response to an appeal filed by Shamima Akhker, producer of the movie. But the petitioner moved the Supreme Court’s Chamber Judge for a review of the verdict.On September 10, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court ordered for maintaining status quo on the movie till September 14. The matter was forwarded for hearing to a regular bench.The film, directed by Nazrul Islam Khan, was first scheduled to be released on September 4.Rescuers retrieved 19-year-old Reshma from under the rubble after 17 days of the worst-ever building collapse tragedy in Bangladesh’s history that left over 1100 people dead in April 2013.
