Staff Reporter :
The Supreme Court on Sunday received the video and audio recordings of private satellite channel– Ekattor TV– on a report and talk show on conversation between two judges.
After receiving the documents, a two-member bench of the Appellate Division, comprising by Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, fixed Tuesday (tomorrow) for passing an order in this regard.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam submitted the video footage and audio tape on behalf of the Ekattor TV as per an earlier order of the apex court. Ekattor TV’s Chief Editor and Managing Director Mozammel Haque Babu, National Press Club President Shafiqur Rahman, President of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and Bengali daily Janakantha’s Executive Editor Swadesh Roy were also present at the time in the court.
Before the Supreme Court’s final verdict about war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, Daily Janakantha on July 16 published an article written by Swadesh Roy, which questioned the judge’s conduct over the case.
The apex court found the newspaper’s editor and publisher Atiquallah Khan Masud and Swadesh Roy guilty for contempt of court for the article. The court on August 13 delivered verdict against Masud and Swadesh Roy. It sentenced them to confinement to the court room for three hours and fined them Tk. 10,000 each for committing contempt of court.
During the contempt rule’s hearing on August 10, Janakantha’s lawyer produced a transcript of a telephone conversation between Chief Justice SK Sinha and someone else, which the defense claimed was a discussion on BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s appeal and a case on another BNP leader Moudud Ahmad’s house.
Ekattor TV ran a news report in the same evening, in which the conversation was aired. Later at night, participants in its talk show ‘Ekattor Journal’ discussed the audio tape of the conversation.
