Staff Reporter :
Police foiled a group of Supreme Court lawyers’ road march programme organized to draw the attention of the Chief Justice to their demand of resuming the regular activities in all courts across the country immediately maintaining health guidelines and social distancing.
But the lawyers could not cross the Supreme Court boundary as the police stopped them there. Then they held a short rally near the bar council building.
The lawyers group in the name of ‘General Lawyers Council’ was holding a
series of protest programs to meet their demand. Advocate Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi, Convener of ‘General Lawyers Council’ and a former Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said that they could not go to the Chief Justice’s residence as the police stopped them and the gate of the Supreme Court was closed.
The lawyers then raised five-point demands. In the rally, the lawyers said that regular court activities across the country must be resumed immediately, appropriate steps to be taken to keep the legal arena free from corruption and all kinds of optional leave of the Supreme Court and lower courts for 2020 and 2021 should be canceled. They demanded Tk 1 lakh for each lawyer as financial incentive from the government treasury as the courts have been closed for four months due to coronavirus pandemic. As a result most of the lawyers had gone jobless.
They also demanded interest free loan of Tk 5 lakh for each lawyer for a period of five years subject to their request.
Advocate Shah Ahmed Badol, Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub, Advocate Rafiqul Islam Talukder Raja, among others, were present in the program.
