M Faruque Hossain :
The Supreme Court has eased the process of paying fine by the convicted prisoners, during serving the jail term.
Under the existing provision of the code, a representative or a relative of any convict requires to deposit the fines in the specific court where one is convicted. This made the payment system complex for the convicts and their relatives. The amendment has been made to alleviate the payment.
To relieve the convicts from the hassle, the jail
authorities sent a letter to the Supreme Court Registrar General on August 2. Then, a five-member committee headed by High Court Division Registrar Abu Syed Dildar Hossain was formed to amend the provision by the order of the Chief Justice.
The committee recommended that the fines can be paid by the convict through treasury challan. The Supreme Court gave its approval to the recommendation on September 8. According to the SC circular, the relatives of the convicted prisoners can deposit the fines in Bangladesh Bank or the Sonali Bank branch, where the judgment giving court is situated or the convict is serving the jail term.
After payment, the challan copy will have to be submitted directly to the jail authorities where the convict is serving. After scrutinizing the formalities, the jail authorities will release the prisoner if the jail term was over and will inform it to the trial court, according to the circular.
The jail authorities must verify the authenticity of the treasury challan and amount of the money paid to the bank over telephone or e-mail after receiving the treasury record, as per the circular.
The fine money can be paid through the treasury challan with the following code numbers: Session’s/ equivalent court-1-2141-0000-1901, chief metropolitan magistrate court-1-2107-0000-1901, chief judicial magistrate -1-2108-0000-1901.
