The Supreme Court cleared the way for the government to complete the process for recruiting 634 firemen under the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The apex court on Wednesday stayed for eight weeks a High Court order that issued a status quo on the process for recruiting the firemen.
The HC ordered the status quo following a writ petition that brought allegation of irregularities in the recruitment process.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the stay order after hearing a petition filed by the Fire Service and Civil Defence
seeking stay on the HC directive.
There is no legal bar for the Fire Service and Civil Defence to complete the process for appointing 634 firemen in six categories following the SC chamber judge’s order, Deputy Attorney General Samarendra Nath Biswas told reporters.
He said appointment letters have already been issued to the qualified candidates and they will now join the service and relevant training. Following the writ petition filed by 16 candidates, who could not qualify in the recruitment test, the HC on August 14 issued status quo for four months on the process for appointing the qualified candidates to the post of fireman in six categories.
The same day, the HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the process for appointing the firemen should not be cancelled over irregularities.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence recently filed a petition with the SC seeking stay on the HC order of status quo.
In the stay petition, it said there were no irregularities in the recruitment process of the firemen, DAG Samarendra added.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Advocate A M Aminuddin appeared for the Fire Service and Civil Defence, while Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon argued for the writ petitioners.
