The Supreme Court has asked BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to give explanation for a comment on judiciary. The BNP leader will have to submit his explanation by February 22.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the apex court headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha on Thursday called for the explanation during the hearing on three bail petitions filed by Mirza Fakhrul in cases filed over arson and vandalism.
The SC’s directive came following the newspapers’ report that the BNP leader at a party meeting in Sylhet on February 7 commented that the government was trying to control the judiciary.
Earlier, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam pleaded to the apex court to issue a guideline for the media to refrain from giving any adverse comment on judiciary. He also drew the attention of the court to Mirza Fakhrul’s comment.
Meanwhile, the SC bench fixed February 22 also for passing order on the Mirza Fakhrul’s petitions, filed for seeking extension of bail in the three separate cases, as the bail period will expire on February 23.
Mirza Fakhrul filed the petitions on January 7. Earlier on November 24 last year, the HC granted three months’ bail to him on health ground.
The cases were filed with Paltan Police Station on January 4, 5 and 6 last year accusing Mirza Fakhrul and several other party leaders and activists of vandalising and torching vehicles in the capital city.
Advocate Joynal Abedin, Advocate Sagir Hossain Lion and Barrister Rafiqul Haque stood in the court for the defence, while Additional Attorney General Murad Reza appeared for the state.
