A railway employee died under the wheels of a running train, while rescuing a woman and her child, and thereby left behind an example for others to follow.
The courageous and at the same time heart-rending incident took place in the capital’s Kuril area on Friday noon.
The deceased has been identified as Badal Mia, 58. He was working as a Technical Assistant in the Engineering Department of the Bangladesh Railway. However, his tragic death saddened the Railway Officials and employees and the nearby people.
Railway Police said that Badal Mia was
busy with his maintenance work around 1:30pm when he saw a woman and her child crossing the rail tracks near Kuril Bishwa Road unmindfully.
“Badal saw also that a passenger train, Surma Mail, was just few meters away from crushing them. He forgot everything, risked his life and ran to save them from imminent death. Badal did it but could not save himself as he was run over by the train, said Sub-Inspector Mohammad Alauddin, Camp in-Charge of Airport General Railway Police on Friday evening.
The train was coming in from Sylhet. Badal’s body was later taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
