Police filed a case against about 4,000 people for the 5 April arson attack on public offices in Saltha upazila of Faridpur district.
On April 6, Sub-Inspector of Saltha Police Station, Md Mizanur Rahman, who was injured in the attack, filed the case accusing 88 identified and 3,000 to 4,000 unnamed attackers.
Ashikuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Saltha Police Station said the case was filed for the arson attacks on government offices and the police.
“Police detained three people and identified two more in connection with the case. The fugitives would be arrested soon,” the OC said.
On 5 April night, a mob waged an arson attack against the government’s anti-Covid-19 drive, damaging the Saltha Upazila administration office and other public establishments.
The mob were reportedly agitated by a rumour that a person protesting against the government’s drive was killed by police firing.
To control the mob, police fired rubber bullets, lobbed teargas shells and used sound grenades. Officials of the arson-hit public offices were also taking preparation to file cases, the sources said.
It has been learnt that Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were patrolling Saltha town to keep the situation under-control.
