Both Jatiya Party MP Salim Osman and school teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta were victims of circumstances, claimed the police investigation report.
Deputy Attorney General Motahar Ali Saju placed the report in a HC bench comprising Justice
Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashis Ranjan Das on Sunday. The bench fixed August 10 for the hearing in this regard.
In the report, no one was specifically held responsible for the incident. It rather claimed that the incident took place all on a sudden.
“As the incident occurred suddenly, both Shyamal Kanti Bhakta and Salim Osman became the victims of circumstances. As Shyamal Kanti did not issue any statement against Salim Osman, no legal action followed,” the report said.
Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, Headmaster of the Piyar Sattar Latif High School, was made to do sit-ups holding his ears in the presence of a Jatiya Party MP for his alleged remarks hurting religious sentiments on May 14.
In a suo moto rule on May 18, a HC bench comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir ordered police to inform the court in three days about legal steps taken so far in connection with the incident.
The former BKMEA president claimed that he rushed to the school hearing that a school teacher was being beaten. He added that Shyamal Kanti Bhakta did sit-ups on his own and apologised for remarks against religion.
Member of influential Osman family in Narayanganj, he was also the president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA). His brother AKM Shamim Osman is an MP with the ruling Awami League ticket.
