Sylhet Bureau :
With Eid-ul-Fitr right around the corner, sales have gone up in almost all markets in Sylhet city and upazila towns. The number of shoppers in popular fashion houses, shopping malls and markets has steadily increased since the second week of Ramadan.
Customers of all ages, especially children and youngsters, have started crowding shopping malls since the middle of Ramadan to choose dresses, footwear, ornaments and cosmetics from morning till late into the night, said Nurul Haque, salesman of a Sari and readymade clothes shop at Hasan Market.
Although customers have been flocking to different markets for Eid shopping, they are complaining that price of clothes this year is much higher than previous years.
Roadside businesses have also seen a rise in sales. Alongside Saris, Panjabis and Selwar Kamiz suits, shirts, t-shirts, trousers are in high demand.
However, rain in the last couple of days has thrown a wrench into Eid sales for businesses especially roadside ones.
‘The high prices have forced many people to adjust their budgets. Middle-class and lower income groups are suffering the most,’ said Jahangir Alam, a businessman of Kumarpara area.
‘We have to think a lot before buying something because of the high prices of dresses, ornaments and cosmetics,’ said Shori Ahmed of Dakshin Surma upazila.
‘Despite high prices, the turnout of customers and sales have been increasing as Eid is coming closer,’ said Dulal Hossain, a shop-owner in Modhubon Market.
