As biting cold continues to take toll on public life, sale of warm clothes at the makeshift shops on the Khula city footpaths has reached its peak in the recent time.
People are seen thronging the footpath shops to buy the required warm clothes every day.
Overwhelming crowds of people to buy the winter clothes are noticeable at 70-75 makeshift shops set up on the stretch from Power House intersection to Dak Banglow intersection in the city.
The traders are passing busy time as people of all ages gather there to purchase second-hand warm clothes.
Traders’ shouts at the makeshift shops at the Sonali Bank Circle break the silence of the busy area of the city even amid extreme cold.
Fayezur Rahman, a trader, said they buy bales of old warm clothes from the wholesalers and sell them at several prices.
The wholesale traders buy the bales of clothes from Chittagong and sell them at different prices ranging from Tk 150 to Tk1500 each.
This year, the prices of warm clothes, whether they are new or old, are exorbitantly high, he said further.
He also said they make a sale of Tk4000-5000 in a day with a profit of Tk500.
Imarat Ali, another warm clothes trader, said he, like 20 other traders, collects bales of warm clothes, specially sweaters and jackets of children, from some importers in Khatunganj of Chittagong city.
A bale of clothes sells at Tk5,000 to Tk12,000.
Miraz, a rickshaw-puller who went by warm clothe from a makeshift shop, said he bought a sweater at a cost of Tk200 to guard himself form the shivering cold.
Likewise, the traders at the old warm clothes shops in Nixon Market in the city are passing busy time due to rush of people there to buy the winter necessity.
While talking to this correspondent, some traders said the prices of the warm clothes are higher than the previous year.
People have to count at least Tk 150 to Tk 1,000 to buy each warm clothes.
They sell jackets and sweaters at prices ranging from Tk 150 to Tk 500 each at least.
Sahadat Hossain, owner of M/s Newaz Enterprise of Nixon Market, said he sells jackets for boys at Tk 300 to Tk 2,000 each while long sweaters for girls at Tk 400 to Tk 700 each.
Besides, sweaters for babies are available at Tk 150 to Tk250.
Shahana Akter Shanu, owner of Style Point at Jalil Tower Market, said this year prices of warm clothes have risen to Tk 500 to Tk 1,000 per piece than the previous year.
They sell jackets at prices ranging from Tk 1500 to Tk 4,000 each.
Mahmudul, owner of Aroma Shopping Mall, said this year his sale has been less than the last year.
People often find themselves in indication whether to buy warm clothes as their prices have gone beyond their purchasing capacity.
