The Passengers’ Welfare Council (PWC) and Manobadhikar Jote leaders on Saturday accused bus owners of cheating passengers on the pretext of providing better services.
The demand was raised at a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club organised by Manobadhikar Jote.
They urged the government to take initiatives to bring discipline in the public transport sector.
Passengers’ Welfare Council Convener Mohammad Mostafa said, extra fare is charged on the pretext of ‘sitting service’ although the number of passengers exceed the number of seats in buses.
“They only provide ‘sitting services’ on paper not in fact, they are cheating the passengers,” he said. “The buses carry more passengers than their seat capacities. The buses make unnecessary stoppages to get passengers.”
Manobadhikar Jote Secretary General Milon Mollik said, passengers are suffering because of the indiscipline in the mass transport sector.
“The government should take immediate steps to bring disciple in the sector to end the sufferings of the passengers,” he said.
Joint Secretary General of Manobadhikar Jote Golam Faruk Mojnu, among others, spoke at the programme.
