Sale of Piranha fish is going on rampantly at different markets in Rangpur district.
Sources said, in 2008 the government imposed a ban on cultivation and selling of piranha, a tropical American river fish which is hostile to animals as the fish eats live animals.
But some dishonest people are cultivating the fish in their water bodies and also marketing it with the assistance of some fish traders defying the ban.
Presently piranha is being sold ceaselessly at different markets of the district including Kamal Kachna Bazar, Mulatole Bazar, Darsona, Lalbag, Tarminal Bazar, Mahiganj and CO Bazar area in the city.
The fish is being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per Kg in the local markets. Very often dishonest fish traders cheat the consumers by selling Piranha to them as sea fish Rupchanda.
Bimol (40), a fish seller at Tarminal Bazar area in the city said, that they can sell the fish to the customers without facing difficulties as the law enforcing agencies very seldom conduct drive in this regard.
