Int'l Migrants Day observed: Safety of migrant workers thru’ maintaining legal procedure stressed

Participants at the programmes on International Migrants Day in Barisal on Friday stressed for assurances for safety and security of the migrant workers through maintaining legal procedure with transparency and accountability.
The stakeholders said migration is as old as humanity and we live in an era of unprecedented human mobility.
They suggested speedy and harassment-free police verification report, issuance and renewal of passports, establishing and functioning of labour migration court to prevent fraud practice and special care for ensuring female-labour migration more safely.
District administration, office of employment and manpower and development organization Brac jointly organised the programmes styled as ‘worldwide migration, develop country, festive life’. A discussion was held at Ashwini Kumar Hall after a procession from Circuit House in the city on this occasion.
Representatives of administration, police, employment and manpower exchange office, non-government development agencies, stakeholders, mass communication participated in the programme. Three highest remittance senders of the district were awarded reception with crest. The discussion was presided over by Helaluddin, district employment and manpower exchange officer and conducted by Zakir Hossain, field coordinator, migration proggramme of Brac.
It was addressed among others by Abul Kalam Azad, additional deputy commissioner, Proshanta Kumar Dey, additional district police superintendent, Sajjad Hossain Bhuiya, Sahadat Hossain of Technical Training Center, Jalaluddin, Vice President of Islami Bank Bangladesh Adv ABM Zahidul Islam, Brac divisional staff lawyer.
The speakers and participants said migration is an expression of the human aspiration for dignity, safety and a better future. We should dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, sharing of experiences and design of actions to ensure their protection.
Migrants face death, danger and disappointment in search of their dreams. They usually materially poor, lack hope, take massive debts from corrupt recruitment agencies or traffickers and smugglers in the hope of getting to a safe place, for a new start, the stakeholders noticed.
Demographics, disasters, demand, disparities, dreams and desperation contributes behind the migration.

Narsingdi District Administration and District Employment and Manpower office organized the discussion at Deputy Commissioner’s conference room here in observance of the International Migrants Day
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Suriaya Begum addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Assistant Director of District Employment and Manpower Office Zahidul Islam in the chair.
Assistant Police Superintendent Khaled Ibna Malek and BSS Narsingdi District Correspondent Mohammad Abu Taher were present as special guests on the occasion.
