Market of sacrificial animal is gaining momentum here in Sylhet district as the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha festivity is knocking at the door. The price of the sacrificial animals is going out of control both for low income and marginal people.
Locals claim the ban imposed on exporting cows from the neighbouring country India to Bangladesh through the corridors on the frontiers, price of the same has been increased by about 30 to 40 per cent in the local markets. On the other hand the farmers who engaged themselves with fattening cows commercially are getting benefit from the business.
The boosting animal husbandry sector has been flourishing the economy and improving livelihoods, increasing milk production and meeting and fodder crisis following huge production of grass in vast Barind area.
A source said, “Around 40 small and big markets across the districts like are the ones for buying and selling the sacrificial animals.
As demand of cows generally shoots up before the Eid-ul-Azha festivity everyday, the people are expecting to face a possible scarcity of sacrificial animals due to ban on imports of cows.
A big size ox is sold Tk 70,000 to 100000; middle size is Tk 40 to 50 thousand and Tk 20 to 30 thousand for small on Thursday in the local Kazirbazar of Sylhet markets before the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha festivity.
Agriculture and Environment sources said, the animal husbandry sector is rounding the local market to trace disease affected animal so that the customer coming from different area not be cheated by the vendors of sacrificial animal from the very beginning up to late evening.
