Court Correspondent :
The Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal of Dhaka yesterday framed charges against six leaders and activists of banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam including sacked Major Ziaul Haque in the case filed over the murder of blogger and writer Avijit Roy.
Of the accused, four now in jail, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Judge Majibur Rahman of the tribunal read out the charges in the court. Later, the tribunal fixed September 11 to begin trial in the case. Besides, the court issued arrest warrant against other two accused including Zia as they were shown absconders in the chargesheet.
On February 26, 2015, US-based Bangladeshi blogger Avijit Roy was murdered near the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University by a gang of assailants in an attack that also left Avijit’s wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya wounded. But she survived.
It has been alleged that four persons directly took part in the killing, while others
stayed nearby. Zia himself was present on the scene at the time of killing, the charge-sheet says.
The case over the murder was lodged with Shahbagh Police Station of the city while Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch commenced the investigation. Later, the investigation was transferred to the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
