Saat Tola slum dwellers stage demo for water

Hundreds of Saat Tola slum dwellers of Mohakhali on Sunday staged a demonstration in front of Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA)’s Zonal Office Mods Zone 5 demanding immediate solution to the ongoing water crisis in the slum area.
About 1200 slum dwellers led by Saat Tola slum Central Community Based Organisation (CBO) President Selina Begum took part in the programme.
Selina Begum claimed that some 10,700 families
have been dwelling in Saat Tola slum of which 5,000 only have the legal access to the water lines of Dhaka WASA.
Most of the slum families face acute scarcity of pure drinking water, Selina added.
Sufia Khatun, a slum dweller, said, “We are living with acute water crisis. We have urged several times the concern officials of WASA to resolve the crisis. But they did not take any measure to press home our demand.”
A 10-member delegation of the slum people submitted a memorandum to the officials of Wasa Mods Zone 5 in the afternoon.
The officials assured the protesters to resolve the problem by next Sunday.
The dwellers also threatened of tough movement if the the water crisis in the slum area was not removed.
Chief Engineer of Dhaka WASA Mods Zone-5 Israfil Hossain Akondo admitted to have received a memorandum. “We are looking into the matter,” he said.
Earlier in last December, more than 100 shanties of Saat Tola slum were gutted in a devastating fire.
