A Swiss-made artificial leg was attached to Russell’s body at Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) around 11:30am on Thursday, said Mohammad Shafiq, head of CRP’s Prosthetic and Orthotics Department.
Russel Sarker got the leg from CRP and the surgery free of cost.
“His legs went through medical test and finally the prosthetic was attached. He will be able to walk properly after four weeks training on the artificial leg for his regular activities,” Mohammad Shafiq said.
Russel said: “The prosthetic leg reminds me of my old days when I could walk freely. CRP has given me a new life.”
“I am grateful to CRP and all its employees,” he added.
Executive Officer of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP), Shafiqul Islam said: “Everyone supported him after the accident. So we tried to help too.
“We will provide him with all the services and supports he needs.”
Russel lost his left leg on Apr 28 last year when a Green Line-operated bus ran over him when he stepped outside his car to check damage.
The incident took place on the Mayor Md Hanif Flyover at Dhaka’s Dholaipar.
After being informed, police impounded the bus and detained bus driver Kabir from near the National Press Club.
On April 11, Green Line Paribahan handed Tk five lakh to Russel following an HC order and is expected to pay another Tk 45 lakh in 30 days.
