RU students protest fees hike

The students of Rajshahi University (RU) staged demonstration in front of the university administrative building Tuesday demanding a decrease of fees and to cancel the decision of starting evening master’s courses. The students also demanded to stop the ongoing evening courses at faculty of business and law.
The Vice Chancellor (VC) and Pro- VC of the university along with other administrative officers were confined at their offices during the blockade programme, which was continued from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
According to the earlier declaration, about thousands students under the banner “Teachers and Students against Fees Hike and Evening Courses” brought out a protest procession from the university central library premises and held gathering in front of the administrative building after marching the main streets of the campus.
Students also declared to continue their agitation until their demands are not met and they urged all to abstain from attending classes during this time.
Among the students, Taslima Tahrin, Khademul Bashar, Rahat, Sazedul Saju, Shirin Akter, Ashraful Alam, Golam Mostafa, Abu Sufian and Utsab Mosaddek spoke at the sit in programme.
Among the teachers, Prof Abu Naser of Statistics Department, Susmita Chakraborty of Folklore, Kazi Mamun Haidar and Selim Reza Newton of Mass Communication And Journalism Department expressed their solidarity of the agitation.
Prof Mohammad Mizanuddin, Vice Chancellor of the university told that they already formed a committee led by RU Pro- VC adding that the committee would concern the students of their demands and the position of the university.
Recently, the university authorities in a meeting have taken a decision to increase all kinds of fees and also initiated a move to introduce evening master’s courses.
The agitated students have been continuing their movement from January 16 this year.
