Teachers, students and staff of Rajshahi University on Saturday observed “National Teachers’ Day” at the university in honour of Dr Shamsuzzoha, the county’s first martyred intellectual during the 1969 mass uprising.
Prof Dr Shamsuzzoha, the then RU proctor and a teacher of chemistry department, was shot dead by Pakistani military in front of the main gate of RU on February 18, 1969 while he rushed to the university main gate to protect the students who brought out procession by breaking section 144.
His death accelerated the ongoing mass movement against Pakistan army for withdrawal of historic Agartala Conspiracy Case. The agitation started in Rajshahi and elsewhere in the country on February 15, 1969 when Sergent Zahurul Haque, an accused in the case, was killed by Pakistan army personnel after his arrest.
Commemorating the day, RU authorities chalked out several functions including placing of wreaths at the grave and monument of Dr Zoha, Quran Khwani and memorial speech. Black flags were hoisted at the administrative building, the VC residence and library as well as all departments and the dormitories of the university.
RU authorities led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin placed wreaths on the grave of Dr Zoha in front of the administrative building at early morning.
Later, a discussion held around 10am where eminent writer Professor Sonat Kumar Shaha read out Dr Zoha memorial speech as the chief guest while the VC and Treasurer Professor Sayen Uddin addressed the event among others as well. Chemistry department Chairman Professor Nazrul Islam presided over the programme.
Besides, different cultural, voluntary and political organizations of tthe ccampus also paid tribute to Dr Zoha by placing wreaths on his grave.
A special prayer was offered after Zohr prayers in RU central Mosque.
