RU Correspondent :Teachers, students and employees of Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday demanded to the government to declare 18 Feb as “National Teachers Day”.Prof Dr Shamsuzzoha, the then RU proctor and an associate professor of chemistry department was shot dead by Pakistani army in front of the university main entrance on February 18, 1969, as he tried to convince the army not to fire at the students who were protesting against the murder of Sergeant Zahurul Haque.About 500 teachers, students and staffs of the university raised this demand at a human chain under the banner of “Chemistry Association” held at in front of the senate building on campus around 11:00am.Speakers at a human chain said, Prof Zoha was a real intellectual of the country. For the sake of recalling his sacrifice, it must have to declare 18 Feb as National Teachers Day.”RU authorities observed the day as teacher’s day every year and have been raising this demand since many years but the government did not pay heed in this regard”, Speakers alleged.Speakers also said, as a nation, it is our moral duty to declare the day as National Teachers Day for his outstanding dedication.Among others, RU vice-chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin, Pro- VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan and student adviser Prof Sadekul Arefin were spoke at human chain.
