Roundtable discussion on nutrition for workers held

Speakers at a roundtable discussion on Wednesday shaded some light on nutritional benefits of garments workers and enhancing the productivity.
The discussion on “Adequate Nutrition for workers: Economic and social benefits of fortified rice” was organized by the United Nations World Food Programme and Social Responsibility (SR) Asia Bangladesh jointly.
Md Omar Faruque, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Food was present as chief guest while Sumaya Rashid, Country Director of SR Asia Bangladesh at chair. Nisbat Anwar, Head of HR of Renata Pharmaceuticals, Sayeeda Newaz Porna, Programme Officer of WFP Bangladesh, Dr Mohammad Mahbobor Rahman, Programme Policy Officer, among others, spoke at the discussion.
Dr Rahman highlighted the “Scaling Up Rice Fortification” initiative aims to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in high-risk groups with a strong focus on women and children, by providing rice fortified with essential vitamins and minerals.
The roundtable was also organized to acknowledge the changing paradigm of economy in Bangladesh as well as discuss with RMG stakeholders about giving emphasis to workers’ healthcare and the nutritional conditions that can contributes to improve the productivity of the workers.
Around twenty (20) brands and 30 factory top management representatives were present in the round table discussion. With funding from theKingdom of the Netherland and support from Australian Aid, this joint initiative between WFP and the Government of Bangladesh is being implemented since 2013.
