Dhaka University : The Rokeya Day was observed on Dhaka University campus on Tuesday marking 134th birth and 82nd death anniversary of Begum Rokeya.
Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain, popularly known as Begum Rokeya, was a pioneer of women renaissance in undivided Bengal.
She was born in December 9, 1880 in the village of Pairabondh, Mithapukur in Rangpur district and died in the same day of December 9, 1932. In Bangladesh, 9 December is celebrated as Rokeya Day.
To mark the day, a colorful procession was brought out on the campus led by Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique.
DU Women and Gender Studies Department organized a Rokeya Lecture Series at the Nabab Nowab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university.
On the occasion, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique attended the function as the chief guest while editor of the Daily Star Mahfuz Anam was present as the special guest.
Chairperson of the Department of Women and Gender Studies Tania Haque presided over the function while Vice-Chancellor of Central Women’s University delivered the keynote paper on Begum Rokeya.
The DU Vice-Chancellor called upon the students of new generation to follow the ideologies and ethics of Begum Rokeya in their lives to make it more successful and worthy.
Terming Begum Rokeya as pathfinder and pioneer of women’s education in the country, he stressed on eradication and elimination of male-female disparity and inequality from the society.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the need to undertake comprehensive and coordinated efforts to achieve desired goal of development of the nation through ensuring equal participation of male-female in all walks of life.
By giving equal opportunities in all sectors especially in education the country can accelerate its development initiatives, he added.

A colourful rally participated by the teachers, students, officials and employees of the university and led by the VC Prof Dr AKM Nurun Nabi was brought out in the campus in observance of the day.
On the occasion, Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AKM Nurun Nabi attended the function as chief guest while Convener of the Begum Rokeya Day Observance Committee of the university Dr Tuhin Wadud in the chair, teacher of the Department of Women and Gender Studies Sajal Roy delivered the keynote presentation on Begum Rokeya.
Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor said the males must stand beside the females in the struggle for establishing equal women rights.
“The women have to struggle at their own in establishing equal rights, dignity and honour in every sphere of life,” he said adding that the males must think females as their companions to ensure equal male-female participations in taking the nation ahead. Teacher of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems Omar Farooque, teacher of the Department of Public Administration Rita Kundu, teacher of the Department of Women and Gender Studies Mir Tamanna Siddika and students Urmila Barman Bithi and Shakhawat Chowdhury took part in the discussion.
Head of the Department of Women and Gender Studies of the university Humayun Kabir delivered the welcome speech in the post-rally discussion moderated by teacher of the same department Kuntola Chowdhury.
The VC said great woman Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain conducted her activities not only for women renaissance in the then colonial society, but she had expanded her huge endevours for renaissance of the humanity as a whole.
Recalling the unparalleled contribution of Rokeya, he said she was the first woman to realise absolute necessity of ensuring education and human rights of the womenfolk for their real development, dignity and civilised status in every sphere of life.
Terming Rokeya as national pride, idol of women community and a world leader, he stressed for spreading her philosophy among the young generations for realising her dream through ensuring modern education for women and their empowerment.
Comilla University: The Department of English at Comilla University (CoU) observed the 134rd birth and 82nd death anniversary of Begum Rokeya, the bengali revolutionary feminist writer with due respect on Tuesday.
Liberal Minds, a winged organization of English Department organises discussion program titled “Begum Rokeya, Feminism and the Current Context” was held to bring out Rokeya’s contributions in the field of feminism.
Ali Rezwan Talukdar, an Asst Prof of English delivered the key-note spech of the program while MM Shariful Karim, the chairman of English Department, Md. Abul Hayet, the students advisor of the department, Md. Harun, lecturer of English and others were present at the program.
The speaker at the program said that Begum Rokeya struggled for establishing women rights, freedom, education, empowerment, economic emancipation and movements creating a renaissance in the then highly conservative and British-ruled colonial society.
The speaker of the program read out some essays and letters of Rokeya and other prominent writers of the world including British feminist Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. Moreover, an Irani movie “The Stoning of Soraya” was shown to create awareness among the students. At the end of the program, all the audience took an oath for not to make any discrimination between male and female in their personal life.
