Staff Reporter :
Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar on Monday began a three-day long strike for realisation of their four-point charter of demands at Chakmarkul, Shamlapur, Jadimura and Kutupalong camps.
Shops and trading in the camps are remaining shut-down as parts of the strike.
The refugees avoided all NGOs, public sector officials, UNHCR’s officials, WFP officials and did not receive relief goods.
They claimed that camp authorities of Chakmarkul camp and Shamlapur camps have been keeping them confined for last four days and preventing them to go outside the camp.
Abdur Rahim, a school teacher and Rohingya community leader, said, “We have two specific vital points. Our demand is to identify us as Rohingya and we do not want to share any family information with Myanmar.”
“Bangladesh government is sharing our all kinds of family information with Myanmar as per clause of the memorandum signed with Myanmar,” Rahim said.
Camp-in-Charge of Chakmarkul camp Mahabubur Rahman said, Rohingya refugees were observing strike from Monday morning with their four-point demands.
They have already published a handout of their four points demand on group in social media WhatsApp.
Their main demand is that they want to be identified as Rohingya in the smartcards and they do not want to share any family information with the Myanmar government.
Shamsud Duza, Additional Commissioner for refugees, relief and repatriation in Cox’s Bazar, said that government is trying to making assistance card as processes of repatriation. But Rohingya refugees are refusing to provide their family data.’
