A gang of armed robbers looted valuables waylaying 15 trucks and CNG-run auto-rickshaws at Barni on the Sylhet-Companiganj road on Tuesday night. Witnesses said the robber gang, split into three groups, carried out the robbery in the Sylhet-bound vehicles around 8pm and looted cash, mobile phone sets and other valuables at gunpoint.
Policemen were present near the spot; yet they did not take any steps to prevent the robbery, witnesses added.
Dismissing the allegation, Officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station Delwar Hossain said police rushed to the spot after hearing screams of the victims.
Later, the police personnel along with the locals chased off the robbers, the OC added.
