The deceased was identified as Nazmul Islam Sagar, 29, son of Nazrul Islam of Khalishakundi village in Doulatpur upazila.
Acting on secret information that a gang of 10-12 robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery on the Kushtia-Meherpur road by placing logs, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2:15 am, said Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire to police prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
