Roads now a death trap

40 killed in 3 days due to fog, reckless driving

With the stalking of blanket of deep fog and careless driving, the number of road accidents has increased in the country. In the last three days, 45 people were killed and 250 more critically injured in several fatal road crashes, which could have been lessened had the drivers been a bit careful.
On Wednesday, around 23 persons including five in Rajbari were killed and 80 others seriously injured.
And on Thursday and Friday, at least 22 persons were killed and many others injured for the same reasons.
In Mymensingh, three persons, including the auto-rickshaw driver, were killed when a truck rammed an auto-rickshaw on the Mymensingh-Fulpur Highway at Shashar Bazar of Tarakanda upazila in the district on Thursday (Dec 19) morning.
Mizanur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tarakanda Police Station confirmed the news to the media that identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
In Sirajganj, Driver and his helper were killed and 10 others injured in a face to face collision between a passenger bus and a truck on Hatikumrul-Bonpara Highway at Harinchar under Soalonga upazila in Sirajganj.
The deceased were identified as Raju Ahmed, 28, a truck driver, from Dhakur village and Hamjal Rani, 22, a helper, son of Khokon Ali, from Kundarhat village of the upazila.
Sadiqul Islam, Sub-Inspector of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, said.
In Dhaka, an elderly man was killed when a passenger bus hit him near the Asad Gate under Mohammadpur thana of the capital on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Ashraf Uddin Dewan,  
65, hailing from Khalpar village of Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj. In Borguna, a fish trader was killed in a road crash on the Amtali-Patuakhali Regional Highway of Amtali upazila in Patuakhali.
The deceased was identified as Jasim, 32.
Md Abul Bashar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Amtali Police Station, confirmed the matter.
In Chapainawabganj, a housewife was killed when a tractor hit a motorcycle at Bashbaria beside the Nejampur-Hatbakail Road of Nachol upazila in Chapainawabganj.
The deceased was identified as Shiuly Begum, 30, wife of Majibar Rahman, hailing from Chalk-Nejampur village of the upazila. In Habiganj, a pedestrian named Kalachan Dash,52, was killed when a vehicle hit him in Conargat upazila of the district.
In Tangail, a rider of motor bike named Rawshon Zaman Babu, 35, was killed when a passenger bus hit him in Kalihati upazila.
In Natore, a pedestrian named Abdul Hakim died when a truck rammed him in Singra upazila.
In Feni, an youth named Anowar Hossain, 30,was killed in a tragic road crash in Sonagazi upazila on Thursday morning.
In Magura, an youth named Yasin, 24, died in Mohammadpur upazila on Wednesday night.
In Chattogram, one person was killed and six others seriously injuried in a tragic road crash in Shikolbaha Crossing of Karnaphuli upazila of the district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Jamal Uddin, 30, son of one Shah Alam, a resident of Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur.
In Sirajganj, an youth named Abdul Baset,22,died in a road crash on the Sirajganj-Rayganj road under Sadar upazila on Friday. At Jatrabari (Dhaka), a Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) staff has been killed in a road accident in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.
The accident took place in front of Saddam Market early Friday. The deceased is Tariqul Islam Imon, 35, son of Ansar Ali from Narayanganj.
Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Majharul Islam told it to the media.
The New Nation tried to contact with the Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, but he was not available over phone.
Md Shahin Ahmed, Founder of Pathway Driving School said that most of the road crashes are occurred by unskilled drivers. Though there are many driving schools in our country, but those are not imparting quality teaching.
With little training they start their career as drivers that causes frequent road accidents, Shahin added.
