Road crashes kill 46 in four days

At least 46 people were killed and many more injured in road accidents across the country in four days beginning from Monday.Of them, eight were killed on Monday, while 22 on Tuesday, the Eid day, nine on Wednesday and seven people died on Thursday.On Thursday, the seven people were killed in road accidents in Comilla, Munshiganj and Kushtia districts on Thursday.Of them, five were killed in two accidents in Comilla, while one each died in Munshiganj and Kushtia.In Comilla, a police sergeant along with his wife and son was killed when their private car crashed into the railing of a bridge on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Batisha in Chouddagram upazila in the morning.The deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 52, a sergeant of Brahmanbaria District Police, his wife Lovely, 35, and their minor daughter Nuzhat, 3.Uttam Kumar, officer-in-charge of Chouddagram Police Station, said the private car carrying the police sergeant and his family members hit the tree at around 8am after one of its tyres got punctured, leaving Nazrul and Nuzhat dead on the spot and Lovely injured.Critically injured Lovely was rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where she died at about 10am.Meanwhile, two other sons and a daughter of the couple escaped the accident unhurt.The police sergeant and his family met the tragic accident while returning from his village home at Chhagalnaiya in Feni to his workplace in Brahmanbaria after a three-day holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.In another accident in Daudkandi upazila of the district, two people were killed and 30 others injured in a collision between two buses at Bhitpur in the afternoon.In Munshiganj, a motorcyclist was killed and his two co-riders were injured as a pick-up crashed into their bike near Katakhali Bazar in Sadar upazila at noon.In Kushtia, a bus helper was killed when his vehicle crashed into a motorcycle in Bittipara Bazar area on Kushtia-Jhenidah highway in Sadar upazila in the afternoon.Police and witnesses said, the bus fell into a roadside ditch after hitting the motorbike, leaving 15 people injured.The injured were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where Yusuf died.On Wednesday, nine people were killed in separate road accidents in Sylhet, Sirajganj and Thakurgaon districts.In Sylhet, four people, including a woman and her granddaughter, were killed as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Atirbari in Dakkhin Surma upazila in the early hours.Witnesses said, the Dirai-bound bus of ‘Ananda Transport Service’ fell into the ditch around 5am as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving the four dead on the spot and 20 passengers injured.In Sirajganj, three people were killed and 11 others injured in two road accidents in the district.Locals said a Sirajganj-bound battery-driven auto-rickshaw from Belkuchi collided head-on with a bus of ‘Ritu Enterprise’ on Bangabandhu Bridge West Link Road at Sayedabad around 12 noon.Two passengers of the three-wheeler died on the spot while five others were injured.In another accident, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided with a Nasimon (battery-driven human hauler) on Bogra-Nagarbari road in Koira Bazar area of Ullapara upazila, leaving Siddique dead on the spot and six people injured.In Thakurgaon, two people were killed and 29 others injured in a road accident at Comillahari on Thakurgaon-Dhaka highway in the early hours of Wednesday.Highway police said a Thakurgaon-bound bus from Dhaka hit a pick-up in the area around 4:30am, leaving Hamidul dead on the spot and 30 people injured. Later, another died at the hospital.The pickup was carrying a group of picnickers who were returning to Atowari after their picnic in Swapnapuri of Dinajpur when the accident took place.On Tuesday, at least 22 people were killed and many more injured in separate road accidents in Noakhali, Narayanganj, Bhola, Chittagong, Faridpur and Magura districts.In Noakhali, seven people, including three members of a family, were killed and 30 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Sonaimuri-Chatkhil road in Jayag Bazar area of Sonaimuri upazila in the early hours.Witnesses said, the Chatkhil-bound bus of ‘Balaka Paribahan’ from Dhaka skidded off the road and fell into the ditch around 3:30am after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving four people dead on the spot and 33 others injured. Three of the injured succumbed to their injuries at hospitals.In Narayanganj, four people were killed as a private car went down a ditch on Dhaka-Narayanganj link road at Jalkuri in Siddhirganj upazila in the early hours of Tuesday.Witnesses said, moving towards Narayanganj city from a gas refilling station on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road, the car fell into the ditch, killing its four occupants on the spot.In Bhola, three people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus crashed into a roadside tree in Kortarhat Bazar area of Lalmohan upazila on Tuesday morning.Witnesses said the Charfasson-bound bus of ‘Simanta Paribahan’ from Dhaka veered off the road and hit the tree around 6am as the driver lost control over the steering after one of its front tyres deflated.In Chittagong, two motorcyclists were killed as a bus crashed into their bike at Shitalpur in Sitakunda upazila in the afternoon. In Faridpur, five people were killed in two accidents in Bhanga upazila.Four occupants of a microbus were killed as the vehicle fell into a roadside ditch at Chumukdia on Dhaka-Barisal highway around 12:30pm.In another accident, an unidentified man was killed at Maligram around 10am.In Magura, a man was killed in a road accident in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.Police said, Sohel was returning home from Magura town on a Nasiman which was hit in the back by a pickup at Itkhola around 10pm.On Monday, a least eight people were killed in separate road accidents in Habiganj, Mymensingh, Munshiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts.In Habiganj, two people were killed and two others injured when a covered van hit a human hauler on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Nasaratpur in Sadar upazila.In Mymensingh, three people were killed and 25 others injured in three road accidents in the district.Police and witnesses said two buses coming from opposite direction collided with each other on the Mymensingh-Tangail highway near Rahmatpur on the outskirts of the district town in the early hours, killing one spot and 10 others injured.In another accident, a pedestrian was run over by a bus at Shambhuganj bridge intersection in the town around 4am.Besides, a woman was killed and 15 others were injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road at Kapalipara in Nandail upazila.In Munshiganj, two people were killed when a bus knocked them down as they fell from a pick-up on the road on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Shashampur in Srinagar upazila.In Moulvibazar, a man was killed and five people were injured when a bus hit a human hauler at Brahmanbazar in Kulaura upazila in the morning.
