Around two-kilometer road stretching from Matuail to Jatrabari connecting the Mayor Hanif Flyover has turned into bad shape creating untold sufferings to the commuters.
This road is now filled with large dents and potholes while vehicles plying on it are facing serious risks of accidents.
“The two-kilometer road adjacent to the flyover has become a curse for the people of Kajala-Jatrabari area. While we pass through the area we feel helpless as the risk always remained to fall down into the mud and dirty water. On the other hand, the vehicles frequently facing the risk of accidents,” said Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Kajla area.
The people of the area said, the road has remained in bad shape for a long time. Vehicles struggle to move through the area due to big potholes and ditches. The people have been demanding for long to repair the road, but the authorities seem indifferent.
Sources said, though the road is in the Dhaka South City Corporation area, it is under the supervision of the Roads and Highway Department (RHD).
The city dwellers of the area alleged that the RHD is busy with the development of roads and highways across the country and they ignore the city area.
While contacted, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayed Khokon said, “We developed all the streets under our administrative areas. The flyover adjacent road at Kajla is not under our city corporation. It is under RHD. They should repair it soon. If they handover the road to the city corporation, we surely repair it within a very short time.”
The local people as well as the drivers said, the vehicles pass through the flyover smoothly. But when they pass through the adjacent Kajla road they have to go slowly triggering a huge gridlock in the area. Besides, many buses, trucks, taxies and motorbikes got struck into holes.
“If any vehicle went out of order that led to the stoppage of other vehicles on the road creating a
huge gridlock for long time. It is occurring almost everyday. We are facing it, we are suffering, but no one seems to take any responsibility,” Ariful Islam, a CNG driven taxi driver, told The New Nation.
The residents and businessmen of the area alleged that the authorities feel proud of the flyover but do not take any step to reduce traffic jam on the adjacent roads for the convenience of the commuters.
“We need not want to know the road under whose authority, but we want its repair for the sake travellers. We urge the government to extend hands to get the people rid of the sufferings,” said Jihadul Alam, a non-government official of the area.
