The workers of three garment factories on Tuesday staged demonstration blocking a road in the capital’s Mohammadpur area for over three hours in protest against closure of the factories without any prior notice.
Hundreds of workers of Alif Textiles Limited-1,
Alif Textiles Limited-2 and Hexa Garments of Alif Group took to street around 9:30am. The workers found a notice of factory closure hanging at their factory gates when they came to their workplaces after Eid vacation.
The notice said that three factories had been closed for an indefinite period, said Lokman Hossain Bhuyian, an employee of Alif Garments Ltd.
They withdrew the blockade around 12:30pm on law enforcers’ assurance of taking measures in this regard, Lokman said.
When contacted, Siddiqur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said “We will discuss about the disbursement of the employees pay in the meeting between BGMEA members and the owner of the Alif Group.
