Garment workers staged demonstration on the city’s Mirpur Road at Kalyanpur, demanding arrear payment just before the Eid-ul-Fitr. As a result, traffic movement was seized for an hour yesterday.
Contrarily, the garment owners claimed to have paid salaries and Eid bonus of their workers so that they could celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr.
“Every garment factory has paid salaries and bonus of their workers by this time,” said Siddiqur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at a press conference.
Over three thousand factories have already paid salaries for the month of May with Eid bonus, Siddqur said. Around 85 percent factories have already been closed on account of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr. The remaining factories are expected to be shutdown by Saturday, he added.
Meanwhile, hours after the press conference, over 250 RMG workers of Monde Apparels Limited blocked the Mirpur Road at Kalyanpur demanding arrear payment ahead of Eid.
Police and witnesses said some 200-250 workers of Monde Garment took to the street at around 1:50 pm demanding three months salaries and Eid festival allowance.
At one stage, the agitating workers put a barricade near Kalyanpur Foot over Bridge on the Mirpur Road, halting all kinds of vehicular movement from Shyamoli to Gabtoli.
Witnesses said, several hundred vehicles, mostly carrying Eid-holiday makers, were stranded for one hour on the street. Many home bound passengers, who were heading towards homes to celebrate the Eid, were looking anxiety for fear of missing scheduled buses at Gabtoli bus terminal.
Additional policemen went to the spot and restored discipline on the road. As the garment authorities gave assurance to the garment workers to resolve the problem through discussion, they withdrew the demonstration, said Officer-in-charge of Darus Salam Police Station Selim Uzzaman.
The traffic movement resumed after 3:00 pm, the OC added.
