Railway Ministry desires to turn Railway container service in Dhaka-Chittagong line into a limited company.
In this new concept of railway company, Ministry of Finance sought opinions on seven subjects from the Bangladesh Railway, East Zone authority in the meantime, a Chittagong CRB office sources said.
Though the top official shown interests to form container company but the concerned container service officials declines the concept saying it will undermine the supremacy of the railway authority .
CRB sources said a proposal was sent to the Ministry of Finance by Railway ministry in this connection but the proposal remains in preliminary stage.
Sources said opinions will be sought from Port, customs, shipping agents, BGMEA etc in this matter and following the unanimous decisions of all , the formation of limited company will be finalized. Sources said at present Railway handles about 65 thousands TEUs containers annually and this handling capacity may be increased to 8 lakh TEUS if handles half of the total containers of Chittagong Port.
If the railway can handle half of the total containers of CP , the total income of railway will go up as well as the container congestions in port will be eased to maximum extents, users sources said.
While contacted General Manager of East Zone MokbulAhmed told The New Nation that Railway authority desires to constitute container service company aimed at maximum facilities and service to the business community and at the same the income of East zone railway will go up.
In this connection, feasibility study was already done and the concept note for turning container service company sent to Prime Minister’s office and Railway authority is waiting for approval from the concerned authorities, he added.
