Eleven government primary schools were devoured by the river erosion in three districts under Rajshahi division during the current year’s flood.
Of the total devoured schools, eight in Sirajgonj, two in Bogra and one in Naogaon, divisional office of Department of Primary Education (DPE) said.
Abul Khayer, Divisional Deputy Director of DPE, said highest numbers of primary school were affected in Sirajgonj. In addition to devouring schools, the floodwater affected more than 260 other schools. Academic activities remain halted in 139 schools and 32 schools are being used as flood shelters.
The primary schools in Bogra district face loss badly. Two schools were washed away by the river erosion. Academic activities remain stopped in 76 schools due to inundation. Apart from, 10 schools are being used as flood shelters.
In Naogaon, around 148 schools were affected by the deluge besides devouring one school.
Academic activities remained halted in 160 schools and 50 others are being used as flood shelters.
Apart from, 668 schools were affected by the flood in five other districts under the division and floodwater entered into 547 schools. Besides, 110 schools are being used as flood shelters.
Abul Khayer said extent of losses in each of the schools is being assessed by the concerned district primary education office. After flood, renovation works will be done to make the affected schools fit for academic activities, he expected.
Animal health very vital for boosting livestock sector
Veterinary scientists and researchers here Friday urged the service providers to reach the livestock related necessary services to the grassroots growers for boosting the animal resources, particularly cattle and goat farming.
They viewed necessary services like production, primary treatment, deworming, vaccination and farm management should be given on priority basis to boost animal health.
They were conducting a daylong technical session of a week-long training course titled “Animal Health and Management” at the conference hall of NGO Forum for Public Health here.
Achieving Sustainable Livelihoods Development through Cattle-Goat Rearing and Value Chain Activities Project support the course where some 20 CAVE (Community Agriculture Veterinary Entrepreneur) persons took part in the training.
Heifer Project International Bangladesh (HPIB),an ngo, organized the course in association with three development organizations- Jagoroni Chakra Foundation, Wave foundation and Palli Bikash Kendra.
Professor Dr Jalal Uddin Sarder of Department of Veterinary and Animal Science in Rajshahi University and President of Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) conducted the session as focal person.
Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer of the department and BLS General Secretary Dr Hemayetul Islam and HPIB Program Manager (Animal Well Being) Dr Majadur Rahman and its Program officer Dr Harun-or-Rashid also facilitated other sessions.
Prof Jalal Sarder stressed the need for uplifting the livestock sector for food security, self-employment and poverty reduction. He also called for due importance on adopting modern technology, promotion of high yielding varieties and farmers training to overcome the crisis.
Animal resources could be developed through strengthening the economic management. Information, specialised knowledge and research are needed. All concerned should come forward for flourishing the animal resource sector.
Contribution of the livestock sector is immense in terms of meeting up the protein deficiency and socio economic development and said there is no alternative to elevate the sector.
Besides, large-scale farming of fodder could further develop the livestock sector to contribute immensely in fulfilling the protein deficiency in the country.
Capacity building of the service providers and market assessment is very important to boost the advice and inputs services to the producers.
The participants also attended a practical session on cattle and goat vaccination, deworming, urea molasses straw and urea molasses mineral block preparation at Sonaikandi village under Paba upazila of the district.
