Prof ABM Mosharraf Husain, Bagerhat :
Standing ripe Boro and Irri paddies have been damaged due to repeated nor’westers that swept over Bagerhat district and continues raining for several days in all nine upazilas of Bagerhat district.
On the other hand, for want of day labourers, the ripe paddy cannot be harvested. As a result, ripe Boro and Irri paddies may be damaged further if the stagnant rain water of the paddy fields does not recede quickly, it is apprehended.
Farmers of Charbaniari, Santospur and Sadar Unions of Chitalmari Upazila of Bagerhat said, due to the incessant rain for several days their paddy was damaged by this time. They added, in some case they harvested their paddy, but it became impossible on their part to collect the harvested paddy from the paddy fields due to the sudden nor’wester and heavy and incessant downpour.
One Ayesha Begum of village Panchpara under the Upazila told this correspondent when he was visiting the area disclosed, I took lease of 1.5 acres lands for one season and cultivated Irri and Boro paddy there at a cost of Tk.70 t0 Tk.80 thousand. The production was satisfactory and harvesting was already started, but due to continuous and heavy rainfall her standing paddy went under knee-deep water. She added, in many cases the farmers have no space of lands in their residences to keep the harvested paddy to protect them from the rain water. On the other hand, labourers are not available to harvest the paddy. Finding no other alternative I am to harvest the paddy. Basudev, Ujjwal and and Shafikur of the same area told the same.
Paddy fields of village Gotapra, Kandapara, Noaparam Beshargati, Bisnupur, Chulkathi, Sreeghat, C & B Bazar, Saitgumbaz and other villages of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila also went under rain water.
A farmer named Abdul Mannan of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila disclosed to this correspondent that he cultivated Boro paddy on two acres of lands this year and the production was also satisfactory and the harvesting was started. But continuous and heavy shower submerged my paddy field. Even I could recover the harvested paddy from the field and consequently, they are being damaged in the paddy field.
Dipak Kumar Roy, Additional Deputy Director , Bagerhat District Agriculture Extension Department told the newsmen, the target of Boro cultivation of the district for the current season was 51 thousand 6 hundred 40 hectares of lands. But the target was surpassed and some53 thousand 9 hundred 55 hectares lands were brought under Boro cultivation in the district this year. He added, 16 percent paddy was harvested and they are lying in the paddy fields and out of them 3/4 per cent paddy may be damaged in the district. He further added, water is stagnant in 2 thousand hectares of paddy lands of the district and with the disappearance of the hostile weather the stagnant rain water will be receded
