Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday said any discord among the election commissioners won’t influence the normal function of the Election Commission. The CEC made the comments after a view-exchange meeting with the field-level election officials in the Election Commission office, Agargaon, Dhaka.
Asked about the note of dissent submitted by Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder yesterday, the CEC said, “I do not want to talk about the issue that happened yesterday. It has been published in the papers and there is nothing more to talk about.”
Asked about the issue of bringing changes in the Electoral Code of Conduct, the CEC said, there may be few changes and the Election Commission will sit together over the issue. The CEC also said that the field-level officials were satisfied with the election preparations. According to them, there was no threat at the field level.
The CEC said, the Election Commission will take all possible steps to ensure a free and fair general election.
“Tell us what sort of problems you face at the grassroots level and discuss how can those be resolved,” Huda told the officials.
“The Election Commission is an independent and constitutional institution. Do not remain away from carrying out your constitutional duties,” he said.
The Election Commission, on Monday, approved a Tk700-crore budget to hold the 11th general election. It will be held either towards the close of this year or early next year.
