Staff Reporter :A rickshawpuller was shot at by police in the city’s Kalyanpur area on Sunday night.Sazu, the bullet-hit rickshawpuller, was admitted to a private clinic in the city, said Shafiqur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Mirpur Model Police Station. Constable Rizvi Mia has been suspended in this connection, the police official said. The injured Saju said that three policemen started beating him when he and his friends were relaxing in Porabari slum.”The policemen dragged me to the office of Sainik League at Slum No. 8 and constable shot me in the leg,” he said.”The bullet might have been discharged accidentally,” said Mirpur Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Masud Ahmed.He said that police were looking into the matter. Meanwhile, residents of the slum on Monday morning staged a demonstration demanding punishment to the police men. They alleged that they were frequently tortured by policemen when they refused to pay extortion money.On February 3, a tea-seller in capital’s Mirpur area received severe burn injuries when a team of Shah Ali police allegedly attacked him causing an oil spill from his stove. He succumbed to his injuries on the following day.
