OMS of rice Tk 30 per kg starts: Rice price up, syndicate blamed

Price of rice has gone volatile due to heavy rainfall, Boro paddy crops damaged in Haor areas and syndicate business across the country.
Recently rice drive has hit and all time high despite record Aman output.
Last 10 days duration, rice price has increased more than Tk. 10-12 per kg as there is a lack of proper monitoring of Mill owner and holl sale syndicate.
The government ahs lunched Open Market Sale (OMS) of coarse rice at the rate of Tk 30 per kg across the divisional and district towns on Sunday .
According some buyers and traders in the Dhaka, Chittagong, Natore, Dinajpur, Pabna, Bhairab Bazar, Ausuganj in last one year the price of rice including Pyjam, Lota, Sorna, Boro, Minicate, BR- 28, BR- 29 and Chines ER9 has increased by Tk. 10-12 per kg.
Now Miniket, Pyjam, Nujirshail, Khataribhog and Bushmati rice are being sold from Tk. 52 to 80 per kg.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Kishoreganj District President Alam Sarowar Tito said that the rice millers have been making huge profits but the farmers and consumers being deprived.
Senior Adv Maya Bhowmik, TIB and Sanak Ex. President told the New Nation that the government should monitor the rice markets properly as the millers have been increassing rice price irrationally.
Though the rice price has gone skyrocket but the farmers for the millers have been panchasing rice at lower rate than a fair price.
The millers and holl sale traders are making super profit from the rice market from their stored rice. This syndication has been proved as the main obstacle of the common people now.
Sources said that there are 100-150 corrupt businessmen from Kishoreganj, Bhairab Bazar, Pabna, Kustia, Naogaon, Chapai-Nawabganj, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Ausuganj controlling rice markets establishing syndicates across the country.
Kishoreganj District Administration arranged an emergency meeting with rice millers and traders held at local collectorate conference room with D.C Md. Azimuddin Biswas in the chair on Sunday afternoon.
Deputy Sectary of Local Government Md Zohirul Islam, ADC (Education & ICT) Golam Mohammad Bhuiyan, ADM Alamgir Hossain, D.D of Agriculture Extension Md. Shafiqul Islam, Senior Megistrate Abu Taher Sayeed, CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito, A.D of Consumers Rights Protect Md. Ibrahim Hossaion, District Agri Marketing Officer Abdul Kashem, Rice Trader Paritosh Pall, Barabazar Traders Association President Md. Kamrul Islam and Secretary Md. Osman Gani were also present.
