Sylhet Correspondent :
The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) has started reconstructing a portion of the much-talked Sylhet-Companiganj-Bholaganj Highway.
Ranjan Samanta, RHD, Sylhet Executive Engineer said, the revised project had already been submitted with the project steering committee in the capital, a high-level meeting on the revised project would be held in the capital within a few days. If the meeting approves, the whole 32 km road would be made rigid pavement.
The decision to revise the project was taken after the finance minister, also the lawmaker of the Sylhet-1 constituency had written a DO letter to the concerned ministry months ago.
The ECNEC approved the project styled ‘Improvement of Airport bypass intersection-Lalbag-Salutikor-Companiganj-Bholaganj road as national highway’ on April 4, 2015 fixing the cost at Tk 4,415 million. Of the 32-km road, 16.72 km was to be of bituminous work worth Tk 2,250 million while the rest was to be of rigid pavement (concrete construction) at a cost of Tk 1900 million.
In the new proposal, the bituminous work part would be cancelled and the whole road would be of rigid pavement. The whole job would be completed by 2019, he added. It is hard to work on the road during monsoon as the region is close to the Meghalayan border, the world’s highest rainfall area.
In addition to other vehicles, over 2000 overloaded trucks ply on the road daily for transporting stones from the country’s largest quarry at Bholaganj. Besides, a good number of tourists from across the country use it to visit Bholaganj, Bisnakandi and other tourist spots around. A number of inhabitants and traders of the area alleged, in the face large scale agitation by locals the authorities was compelled to make a mega project, which had got several revisions in the last five years. But, sufferings of common people are yet to end.
