BSS, Rajshahi :
Optimum aquifer recharge in the Hard Barind area could be the effective means of protecting its ground water table from further depletion.
“Aquifer recharge is very important to protect overall public health besides the existing agricultural ecosystem through managing a groundwater basin efficiently and effectively”, said Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan from Department of Geology and Mining of Rajshahi University.
He opined that the dried area is turning into extreme drought zone owing to scarcity of water due to the adverse impact of climate change and various other natural and man-made disasters. Prof Chowdhury was presenting his keynote paper in a discussion titled “Transparency, Accountability and Peoples Participation is Important to Protect Life and Environment for ensuring Sustainable Development” here on Monday.
Committee of Conscious Citizens (CCC), an inspired entity of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), organized the discussion in its office to mark the Word Environment Day- 2017. “Scaling up of the Managed Aquifer Recharge Technique” was the main theme of the discussion
With CCC President Prof Abdus Salam in the chair, Director of Barendra Unnayan Prochesta Foyzullah Chowdhury, local unit coordinator of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust Advocate Abdus Samad, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and TIB Area Manager Mahmud Ali also spoke.
Prof Sarwar Jahan said Padma River needs a capital dredging. “If the width of the river is reduced and depth increased, the river will be useful for surface water irrigation as well as resist increase of salinity in the region,” he said.
